Types of Traction
Skeletal Traction
During fractures of the femur, pelvic, hip, and some upper arm fractures, skeletal traction is utilized.
Cervical Traction
When the neck vertebrae are broken, cervical traction is employed. A device that surrounds the head and connects to a harness worn like a vest around the body is used in this type of traction.
Skin Traction
Skin traction is less intrusive than skeletal confinement and involves the use of splints, gauze, and sticky tapes placed directly to the skin on the forearm around the fracture.
-
Contraindications
With traction, there are no protracted dangers. However, muscular spasms or discomfort in the treated region may occur in some persons.
Skin traction is typically not recommended for the elderly since their skin is delicate and might be damaged by the traction.
