2021/2022 Who We Are
traits and characteristics
What are students showing us about their understanding of
traits/characteristics and identity
?
3A and B have been unpacking the concept of
identity
and
traits and characteristics
.
For identity students understand it is about themselves but the understadning is surface so far and they need to dig deeper.
traits/characteristics
students were superficial on the first attempt at the iceberg and are only now beginning to grasp the difference between inside and outside traits.
The engagements unpack the characters of Mr.
and Mrs. Twit worked well in unpacking the inside and outside traits and the anchor chart helped.
Science engagement around plant traits was very engaging and the students (3A) loved the sorting (3B will do it later). They were able to identify inherited traits from the plants.
French Roast video showed that people's inside traits may not match what the outside suggests.
The circle game on the roof sharing the personal truths also showed the differences and inside traits in the children that we can't see.
Global Wednesday inquiries have reinforced the conceptual understandings having students look at and represent their identities and the stories of their names using different media (Paint, collage, and maker space)
What are students showing us about their understanding of how
traits and characteristics
contribute to their
identity
?
How are students beginning to show understanding about how
inheritance
contributes to
identity
?
We have started inquiring into animals and babies looking at traits and then followed up with plants inherited traits -- we are planning a See Think Wonder with our family photos and then with those of the students
We think they definitely showing an understanding of how traits and characteristics contribute to identity. I think the art project really helped them dig deeper and connect to literacy. For inheritance contributes to the identity they got a good understanding of that through the science connection with animals, babies, and plants and the family photo inquiry that we inherited some things but not all things from our parents.
Dug deeper into the idea of inheritance in terms of material things as well as traits - language connection. Students understanding they can inherit traits from non-bio relations and friends. Can also understand about inheriting inside traits and characteristics.
One student reflected he has inherited ADHD from his mum
Next year we could look at inherited traits like tongue rolling, ticklish etc
Students have had three opportunities to try and write generalisations or enduring understandings showing their understanding of the relationship between the concepts
Perhaps we should sort different ideas for identity and put them in a graph to - ideas such as favorite color would be on the top and ideas such as name, family experiences, culture etc would be deeper. I think we need to have this displayed to refer to throughout the unit.
the role of the environment and inheritance
the choices humans can make to develop their identity over time
What are students showing us about their understanding of
how people can change over time and how that impacts identity
?
We looked at how
culture and environment
can contribute to identity
3A and 3B looked at how these factors of culture and identity can contribute to identity. Change can come through age, and experience which can be affected by the space and culture. Friends and other influences and also experience in the sense good/bad things happening and our reactions to it.
ATLs and Learner Profile
development
Students are showing that they understand that these are attributes that they can develop. They are also seeing connections between the
LP and AtLs
and thinking about how the development of the combination of the two can affect their identity.
