1984

Context

The book takes place in a totalitarian regime in the year 1984 in a dystopian life. Citizens are constantly monitored by the INGSOC party through telescreens around the city and in homes. Everyone is forced to love the party leader, Big Brother. Anyone who breaks any law will be faced with sever charges or death for even having a thought against the party.

Characters

Winston

Winston is the main protagonist in the novel and his thoughts and life is shown and how he tries to take down the party however we see that he gets manipulated but the party to love their leader.

Julia

Winston and Julia have an affair and get caught by Mr Charrington. She also hates the party however she feels that they can’t be taken down so she just breaks rules and commits crime alongside Winston. She is a prostitute in the novel

Big Brother

Party leader of INGSOC who controls the community

Mr Charrington

A member of though police who pretends to be Winston's friend and gives him a small room on top of his antique shop with a hidden telescreen. He later turns out to be a member of the thought police and reveals the telescreen and catches Winston and Julia committing crime.

O'Brien

He works in the Ministry of Love and tells winston he’s a member of the ‘brotherhood’ and convinces Winston that he also wants to take down the party however he controls his torturing after they get caught. The torturing makes Winston forget about his thoughts against the party and starts to love Big Brother.

News Speak - Continuous editing of the English language symbolizes the thought control. It make people forget the past language preventing thoughtcrime by removing words
Memory holes - a hole where previous photos and documents symbolizes thoughtcrime and shows the party can control what is true.
Big Brother - A face of the party who serves as a constant reminder that people are under constance surveillance. It is meant to make people feel comforting but creates terror
2+2 = 5 - This shows the party can change the thought and whatever is they say is true. This also shows Winston''s defeat at the ends
Glass paperwight - A symbolizes Winston's past which he barely remembers. It also symbolizes Winston's and julia's relationship and how their hopes and relationship are shattered when the paperweight is shattered.
Rented room and sining woman - signifies the vain thought of freedom
