Ep 155/156: Emil Cioran - Absurdity and Nothingness, Failure and Suicide
Sometimes when you have a problem, you want advice. Other times, you just want someone to listen
Gnostic: The world is flawed in many ways because it was created in a flawed way. God created a world where suffering is a part of the process. Only a malicious God would create a world where we can be aware of this suffering.
-
Antinatalism: Refusing to have children to prevent bringing more unnecessary suffering into the world.

We all experience pain, sadness, and depression in our lives. That's life.
Why do we try to fix those who are in pain? In doing that, we are removing a part of human life for them.
One day, we die; we put death as far away as we can. If we contemplated death every day, we would have a better quality of life.

Cioran thought that writing was therapy. When you express something, it becomes more bearable.
Failure: Cioran saw failure in beauty and success. We don't ask about others' failures unless you know they have an interesting story to tell (who's the better conversation?). People that are successful aim for secure options, they get the expected outcome. However, if you fail spectacularly, it can be chaotic and interesting. More ways to fail. What if we steered into failure?
If we embrace failure, we grow as people. The world is messed up and God messed up. Failure sticks with you, success is a fleeting moment. Your failures follow you forever; would you rather be friends with your failures or would you hate it?
When we aim toward success, we aim away from failure. Our discomfort with failure impacts all of our important decisions. Failing proves to be valuable, even though we dislike them. Failure shows a lack of self-awareness. You wanted to succeed but you were shown you weren't good enough for this. Failure gives us an honest picture of who we are. Success warps our reality; we need to give ourselves chances to fail in order to find our standings in the world.

Suicide: Cioran realized that by talking about the despair in our lives, the best solution is suicide; However, he didn't agree with this method. Suicide as an idea is an aspect of our existence. We have the option to do anything. The only reason you do something is to work to complete a goal.
What problem does suicide get you closer to solving? Suicide comes too late, the problem comes and goes before suicide is an option. Someone who considers suicide hasn't considered life enough yet. "Only optimists commit suicide." If you think that no reason to live constitutes suicide, why do you assume there are reasons to die?
Concept connected to freedom, not end suffering. "Without the idea of suicide, I would have surely killed myself." No matter what, we are not trapped here. Why do it now? What's the rush? We can't undo the past, so why not enjoy the absurdity of life?
