Being a successful indie game developer:
Have and keep up a social media presence / fanbase. Provides updates to fanbase constantly
Work constantly and individually (unless working with partners)
Be able to work without pay
Not knowing if your game / product is going to sell and make income
Having to cut back and reconsider plans due to complications
Constant Evolvement of the Field:
Have to learn new programs as they come out to keep up with the field
creates new expenses like more expensive equipment and licenses
In competition with big game studios that are setting the standard for new games. Audiences are now expecting higher and higher quality which is becoming seemingly more difficult for those who want to become indie game developers.
Big game companies are creating a game monopoly, making it harder for individuals to compete in the market. Creating your own game and potentially a studio is becoming nearly impossible unless you have good funding
These points can also be made in the argument of being a student in game and entertainment. We are now expected to learn so much without being an expert in one thing. In order to obtain a job in the field it seems as though we have to be an expert in multiple fields (character design, viz dev, storytelling, environment art, 3D art) as soon as we graduate.
