Grade to the 3 P's
performance against teacher identified learning goals
progress as students complete tasks/projects
process, or habits of mind, that help students achieve goals
grading should encourage personal levels of excellence, while also helping students be aware of practices that lead to growth
Schedule Frequent Formal Check Ins
provide feedback NOT grades
utilize formative assessments with intent
self/peer assessments and grading
Utilize tech such as Flipgrid, GoFormative, Padlet
allows teachers to determine if more scaffolding is needed
Allow Students to Revise and Resubmit
leads to better performance and persistence in tasks
allows for students to utilize "second and third wave" thinking
clear and concise rubric/instructions is key
Use Anchors to Provide Clarity
give students descriptions and models of expertise in their rubrics/intructions
allows students to see what is expected of them
Encourage Goal Setting and Progress Monitoring
make time for check in, together and individually between teacher and student(s)
allows for growth of key habits (persistence, metacognition, flexible thinking)
utilize "scrum boards" tool to show tasks that are to do, in progress, and complete
