The presentation of mother-daughter relationships in media types
Movies/Television
The Mamma Mia franchise contains one of the most well known mother-daughter relationships to ever hit theaters. The first movie specifically details the intense connection formed and the emotions that go along with daughters moving on with their lives and into marriage. This specific scene along with the song choice of ¨Slipping Through My Fingers¨ is the main moment in the movie where we see this bond really come into play. In the scene, Donna helps Sophie prepare for her wedding that evening, while singing a song about how quickly time has passed by them and her memories of Sophie as a young girl, perfectly portraying the perspective of a mother watching her daughter go through milestones.

Lady Bird is a coming of age movie that largely appeals to its target audience of teenagers. With a mother-daughter relationship that quickly shifts from tender love to hostility, it allows for many teens to resonate with the movie. This kind of up and down relationship is important to see in film because it shows that real life connections are not made of fairy tails and can be bumpy along the way. Through this presentation, it allows for viewers to come to terms with their own rocky connection with their mother or daughters and be able to see that it is okay to not be perfect.

Brave is a Pixar movie that focuses on this mother-daughter relationship that we do not often see in movies directed towards young children. In this, we do see the trope of an angsty teen fighting with her mother, which seems as though it is very commonly portrayed in books and film. However, this specific movie is very different from the rest because it was the first princess movie to focus Merida and Queen Elinor rather than finding a romantic partner for Merida.

Gilmore girls is a television show that is widely known for its famous mother-daughter relationship between Rory and Lorelai. This specific relationship exemplifies the friendship that can be seen between mothers and daughters. It is also an example of how teen mom´s raise and get along with their children in comparison to the ¨traditional¨ way. Their on screen relationship shows that honesty, adoration, and openness are extremely important in forming a functional and loving relationship.

Social Media
Mother´s day is an obvious holiday where this specific relationship is represented. With many running to Twitter to post their love, it is not shocking to find that celebrities do as well. The presentation of this relationship from celebrities to media makes one question how truthful the love really is. For example, there is a tweet from Kris Jenner wishing her mother a happy mother´s day thanking her for raising her to be the woman she is today. It is difficult to tell whether this post is truly made out of love or if it was made just for appearance within a heavily matriarchal family, showing the murkiness of the presentation of this kind of relationship.

Instagram posts are another form of social media where we often see mother-daughter relationships in action. This site also begs the question of whether or not the relationship is really this way or if it simply a staged photo to make the love more believable. The presentation of this most commonly pushes the mother and daughter that are best friends trope but makes one doubt if that is really the case. For example, there are pre-made captions many use when they post a picture in order to show love for their mothers, whether it is fake or not cannot be told simply by viewing the pictures or captions.

Mama´s Song by Carrie Underwood displays the love and gratefulness a daughter has for her mother. In this song, Underwood thanks her mother for raising her and assures that her upcoming marriage will not hurt their relationship because she will always be her little girl. This specific presentation shows that growing up does not necessarily mean growing apart.
