Pathophysiology
There is a desteriotion of articular cartilage and the dicrease in the synovium that lubricates the joint.
CAUSES
An observable deformity
A history of injury or surgery in the affected joint
Wear and tear in the articular cartilage experienced with age.

Stiffness
Pain
Limited mobility
On physical exam, there may be a snowball crunching sound in the affected area.
Nursing interventions
Pain management including joint mobilisation
Patient education regarding weight reduction
Encouraging the patient to join the support groups
Referral to occupational therapist, physiotherapist and social workers
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
Definition
An autoimmune disease causing the symmetrical inflamation of the joints
RISK FACTORS
Cartilage and the articulating bones are eroded
Results in swelling of the joints and inflammed synovial lining
Causes
SYMPTOMS
Warmth over the joint
Pain
Swelling
Decreased ROM
Multiple joint stiffness
