Helping a struggling student
Identify the issue
Distraction/unfocused?
What is distracting them?
Distracted by an object? Did taking away the object resolve?
If not, ask the student what is going on with them
Did the student tell you anything concerning?
No, the student gave a valid reason why they are distracted right now
Speak with class manager and escalate if necessary. :silhouettes:
If yes, problem solved
If no, review the content of your lesson to see if you can make it more visually stimulating.
Student could be tested for ADHD or autism
Student does not have ADHD or autism.
Student has ADHD or another neurodivergence
Differentiate lesson content and delivery.
Student is now able to focus on content as they are more visually and mentally stimulated.
Students get distracted by their neighbours sometimes, try moving their position in the room. Did this help?.
If yes, problem solved.
Move the student to another area of classroom.
Student can focus, issue resolved.
Behaviour issue?
Reinforce the class rules.
Remind student of consequences.
If no change, speak to student after class or outside to see what the issue is.
Unconcerning issue that can be resolved in class.
Concerning issue
If student behaves, issue solved.
If student begins behaving, issue resolved.
Student struggling with work.
Compare students levels
If student is struggling especially, consider if any neurodivergency
Student has not been diagnosed with any special needs. Check to see if student can be tested if they have not been tested before and you are significantly worriedd
Student is not neurodiverse, but is still struggling.
Student is neurodiverse and needs differentiation
Differentiate in the classroom.
Are all students struggling, if so you need to review your content/plans.
