Pollination
-
-
Self pollination
-
Pollen grains from the anther fall on the stigma of either the same flower (1) or another flower on the same plant.
For (1) to happen , the flower needs to be bisexual i.e. with both male and femal parts.
If flowers are unisexual i.e. either male or female reproductive parts is present, they can still self pollinate. A male can transfer pollen grains to flower on femal flower the same plant.
cross pollination
-
Pollen grains are transfered from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another lowers on another plant
Agents of pollination
-
Wind
Large anthers on long filament hang outside the flower. The pollen is blownaway by wind pollen stick to feathery stigmas
eg. grass, maize, sugarcane, etc.
water
Aquatic plant realease pollen grains into water and the water carries pollen grains for pollination.
eg. vallisneria, water weed, pond weed
Animals
some of the agents that help for water pollination are birds, bats, etc.
eg. orchids, kapok,baobob , sausage tree, floss-silk
