Planning the sections:
Section 1:
the principles of LTV
LTV can is used when an individual has had multiple failed attempts at weaning or they suffer from a chronic condition that may mean they will struggle with maintaining their airway and also oxygen levels. This could be a chronic condition called Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which is a respiratory Illness that causes inflammation of the airway and also damage to the air sacs, meaning that the individual cannot move air efficiently this would mean that towards the end of the disease the individual may need more support to be comfortable.
-
LTV van be a lifeline for somebody. It may offer them freedom in life to be able to complete activities that with the LTV they may never have bee here or even strong enough to be able to complete. However, it may also cause mental challenges for them and their family. - I will look into this more in section 4.
Section 2
There are multiple reasons why LTV maybe used to treat conditions. This could be the individual has failed weaning attempts multiple time. or it could be from progression of an expected disease
MND: motor neuron disease effects the brain and the nerves. It progresses and case difficulty with talking, walking and breathing. LTV maybe used here to make the individual feel comfortable in the end stages of life.
Another conditions that can be benefited from LTV id COPD. People who suffer with COPD quite often had an extensive amount of cigarettes' throughout their life and this can often lead to the condition. in the end stages they will find it extremely hard to be able to breathe by themselves resulting in the use of LTV for comfort.
Section 3

It can offer comfort in peoples end stage of life and also keep them alive so they can live a longer life.

Case Study: A man tested positive for Covid-19, he had some prior medical history that medically would deem him at more risk for the virus. He was taken to ICU and for two months was put on a respiratory ventilator to be able to support his breathing. Eventually the ventilator started to work along with other medications. Even though they still feel out of breathe now after rehabilitation by using LTV it gave them their life back. (2)
Section 4
-
LTV can really help an individuals life however it could also be a mental tole n them. If an individual is in a coma or even a child that needs to use it they do not have any rights. There is the argument that it could make it worse in the long term rather than better.
Case Study: Charlie Guard was a young boy who suffered with a rare genetic conditions called MDDS. ' Charlie had serve brain damage and could not open his eye or move his arms or legs .Multiple organs we also effected such as the kidney. They wanted him to go to America to receive a certain treatment but it had not been accepted in the UK.GOSH tried to apply for ethical permission however Charlies conditioned worsened. After contacting other experts it was deemed that his life support should be switched off. His parents disagreed however courts overruled them and the descion was made to overrule them. (3)
Introduction
My essay is going to be based on the arguments for the ethics on LTV and why is has to be used. I will focus on the idea of using case study's throughout my essay to be able to build arguments surrounding real life topics, especially surrounding the idea of children and them not being able to have say with their treatment and the effects later on in life. I will specifically focus on the 'Charlie guard' case.
Conclusion
Overall there are many points for positive points for using LTV. It can help save and also give someone's life back and makes them comfortable. On the opposing hand from my research there is still a strong argument for against LTV depending on the conditions such as a child who doesn't understand what is going on around them, their parents ants what is best for them, like Charlie guard but it is hard to find the balance.

Section 1:
Long term Ventilation is a treatment that aims to help individuals with isolated respiratory failure or a chronic illness. (1) This could be COPD that is a condition that effects the lungs, by the end of the Illness it has seriously damaged the lungs so the individual is really going to feel tired, and short of breath. So by using a form of ventilation it can really help the individual.
