- - - - Improvement of SG's port started in 1850.
      - Arrival of steamships by then the old harbor at the Singapore River had become increasingly overcrowded. Due to the lack of space along the river banks to build more warehouses for storing goods
      - In 1852, the New Harbor was built in the strait between the southern coast of Singapore. New Harbour includes
        
        Deep waters allowing steamships & sailing ships
        
        Expanded further in the late 19th Century and early 20th as its trade and industries continued to grow
        
        The modernization of the port was done just in time to cope with the increasing world demand for tin and rubber
    - - During 1819 to 1823, all decisions regarding Singapore had to be approved by Sir Stamford Raffles.,
      - Singapore was placed under the British India government after raffles return to England in June 1823
      - During 1824 - 1858, Singapore struggled with managing the needs of the expanding population and the increasing size of SG's trade
      - Difficult to raise money to pay for better port facilities, security and social services such as education and healthcare.
      - Impose taxes on Singapore's trade, traders protested any proposals that would affect Singapore's free port status.
      - Government has no choice but to turn to taxing gambling and opium and liquor. Owners who could offer the largest sums of money to the government were granted the right to collect taxes
      - EIC lost dominant power of China being a trading company as an effort to maximize profit they began cutting costs and refused to spend money.
      - Gambling was banned in 1829.
    - - Traders were not required to pay taxes on the goods they carried & thus could trade
      - Transshipment -> Transfer of goods from one trading ship to another
      - Repackaging & redistribution of imported manufactured goods & regional produce
      - Singapore provided an easily accessible, tax-free and centrally located place for both Western and Asian goods to be collected and exchanges.
    - - Police Force
        
        The police force was very small back then thus it was very hard to keep peace in a population
        
        Traders wrote to the Governor about the inability of the police force to maintain law & order and requested for a stronger police force.
        
        Thomas Dunman made the police force appear more appealing to the public
        
        Thomas Dunman fought for better working conditions and higher wages for the workers.
        
        Dunman achieved much as he was able to reduce gang robberies.
        
        By 1930, police officers had gone through professional training and used telephones, motor cars
