Wilson: Western societies undergo secularisation → religious beliefs, practices and institutions lose social significance ( Britain becoming a secular society )
Criticisms:
- Religion is not declining, instead is changing from
- One-sided → focuses on decline not growth of new religions
- Evidence of decline of church attendance ignores people who believe but don’t go
- Religion has declined in Europe not globally → not universal
- Past was not a ‘golden age’ of faith → future will not be an age of atheism
- Religious diversity increases participation (choice) → no overall trend + people make use of religion in different ways.
