Ep 151: Erich Fromm on Freedom
Love is the only answer to separation.
Life as a fetus is great. However, you must eventually be born. As you age, you crave more freedom. Move out on your own at 18; you can go somewhere and not have to ask permission.
Pre-civ human life was dictated by nature, created cities and class systems
Renaissance was a turning point for this bond
We are now independent from nature
Why would we want to escape from freedom?
Good because we are independent, responsible, and free-thinking
Bad because WE are responsible, we choose our own adventure and are responsible for the results
We are not supposed to live with this freedom
Embrace (positive) freedom or escape (to a "reverse" negative) freedom
Positive freedom: Freedom to do something. Connect to the world spontaneously. Choose your happiness
Negative freedom: freedom from ___, type of freedoms we experience when we are no longer under tyrant rule
Living in a place with too much negative freedom
Analyze motivations as a mixture between psychological and sociological factors
Escape from freedom:
Authoritarianism: Sadomasochism (control others while being controlled). Want to support authoritarianism so others can be controlled but also want to be under that authority. The sacrifice of freedom and individuality. Drawn to power!
Automaton Conformity: Gets rid of individuality and pressures of uniqueness. Submit freedom to authority or conform to a piece of the machine. Fromm believed this to be highly effective.
Destructiveness: The Destroyer. Opposite of the person that embraces freedom. Life is unpredictable when people are free. Destroyer tries to destroy life and the things they can't control. Sacrifice individuality; necrophiles
We are condemned to be free.
