Ep 150: The Frankfurt School
Erich Fromm
"Love"
People try to find romantic love
However, many relationships fail. Any and all attempts made by a single person are failures. People use horrible strategies "Become more lovable."
Love finds you, you don't find it. Passive process
Some people fabricate love with others and turn each other into a commodity
We buy things, enjoy them, and then throw them away when we don't get satisfaction from it
We need love to get rid of our loneliness
Love is not a noun, it's a verb. Real problem is not being lovable
1 more item...
"The fundamental problem of human existence" = separateness
People want to find a way to connect to larger things
But we live in "boxes" (houses, cubicles, cars); we are alone and we know it
Still want to pursue love as an art
Similar to the process of improving at other forms of art
Humility: Avoid your ego, face your faults
Courage: Getting better is scary; must be strong
Must love yourself first!
Faith: Must stick with it, accept failures and persist
Discipline: Love is not passive. You must "practice" every day
