How does Jesus fit into this climate?
There are 2 religions, Christianity and Judaism that view Jesus in very different lights. The Christians believe that Jesus is a Messiah and consider him as their saviour. Whereas, the Jews do not accept Jesus. They believe that Jesus did not achieve Messiah duties. Jews believe that a Messiah is suppose to bring certain changes into the world and be able to achieve certain criteria before being called Messiah.
Jewish practices
They offer sacrifices
They are monothesitic which means that they believe in only one god
Respect the Torah- the Law and it contains all the rules used for sacrifices
Roman household structure
1st: Paterfamilias (the man of the family)
2nd: Sons and daughters
The Roman household structure was like a pyramaid
3rd: Slaves
4th: Freedman (once were slaves, but they are not considered free because they still have certain duties to their paterfamilias)
Roman religious beliefs and practices
The Romans adopted the Greek system. Such as culture, education and language.
The Romans were polyesthic which means that they believe in many gods
The Romans use crucifixion as a scare tactic to show other countries or people to not mess with Rome
They made sacrifices or offered sacrifices to their Gods/ Emperor
Centurality of the Jerusalem Temple in Jewish life
The Sadducees no longer existed and the Pharisees have evolved the practices of the faith by focusing on the Torah. Thefore this was the starting point of Rabbinic Judaism
The Temple is the prime focus in a Jewish person's life and it influences their life in size and function
Since the Temple was destroyed there was no place to offer sacrifice
Jewish beliefs
Pharisees: religious leaders also known as the scholars of the Torah. They make rules for every aspect of life.
Essenes: this group formed their own community because they believed that the Temple leadership has become impure.
Sadducees: part of the ruling class and were able to manage the Temple. This group had to maintain their status
They believed or saw no hope of a coming Messiah
Roman rule
According to the Roman judiciary system the judge would side with the rich than the poor because the rich would have more incentive
Romans stress the use of patron-client relationships. This relationship is basically like a lawyer and their client.
Romans have thirved by using taxation
