How Narratives affect History - Coggle Diagram
How Narratives affect History
What is History?
A record of the past
A record can be different depending on someone's perspective
Records rely on constructed evidence
Several pieces of evidence are required to solidify a record as reliable.
The reliability of the evidence matters
What is a Narrative?
A narrative is the way we organize, arrange, and order the information we experience; it is a story.
Beliefs and motivations influence narratives. The combination of beliefs, narratives, and motivations form one's perspective.
Narratives act as a spotlight that focuses on some information and themes while leaving any irrelevant/less important information out. Narratives require excluding and including pieces of information.
Perpective
The combination of narratives, motivations and beliefs form one's perspective.
One's perspective might be bias to another persons perspective.
Some perspectives might be different depending on the information available.
Someone's perspective might change depending on the outcome/accomplishment they want to happen.
The Importance of Having Multiple Pieces of Evidence.
The importance of having multiple pieces of evidence is that it helps create a complete unbiased story of the past
A single piece of evidence alone is insufficient in building a reliable account.
The Full Story of the Three Little Pigs
There would be a lot of differences between the two records of the event since each record was told from a different perspective. The wolf views eating the dead pigs after accidentally killing them as something that is morally ethical. On the other side the pigs viewed the wolf as the trecherous monster who killed and ate the two pigs.
Whose Record of the Past is Correct?
No record is wrong or right. It is up to the reader to find the evidence from both sides and use that to make their own perspective on the issue.
Why could there be differences in this narrative?
Because each record is told from a different perspective and a different animal. Both sides have different perspectives on what right or wrong and what is unethical and ethical.
