'Running, one boy sees over his shoulder the ball of light cometting around the yard, the cat afire screaming like an evil spirit, cutting back across its own path' (p78). This is clear to see the way that the cat is the demon, haunting Maurice's past reminding him that there is nothing that he can do to change that past, continuously being there, standing there and always watching him. There was little that they could do to understand and to see the way that the cat runs, chasing him in his dreams, and yet he still continues to wait for the cat to catch up, showing his stubbornness and how he continues to ignore the past, yet sort of egging it on, daring the cat and the past to stand up to him.
