5 Themes of Geography - 6th Period
Movement
Definition: Movement describes how goods, ideas, information, and people migrate.
Movement could be done locally or even globally.
Example: China exports many goods to the USA.
Place
Definition: Place describes the physical and human characteristics of a location.
Physical Characteristics - describes the natural environment of a place.
Examples: climate, height above sea level, landforms, terrain, and vegetation
Human Characteristics - describe the people of a place, both past and present.
Examples: economic activities, human-made features, language, political systems, population distribution, and religion
Location
Definition: Location describes where a place is on earth.
Absolute Location- is a place's exact location. Absolute location can be identified with latitude and longitude coordinates or an exact address.
Example: My home address is an absolute location.
Relative Location - is a description of a place's location in relation to other places. You could describe a place using words like nearby, above, down the road, east of, etc.
Example: Havre is west of Chinook.
Regions
Definition: Region describes an area with similar cultural or phsyical characteristics that set it apart from other areas.
Functional Regions - are made up of a single place and the surrounding regions tied to it.
Example: Chicago is a large city with many suburbs.
Formal Regions - are identified by official boundaries and include cities, counties, states, and countries. They are clearly known and can be inside of each other.
Example: Havre is a city in the state of Montana.
Vernacular Regions - are areas that don't have a formal boundary but are commonly known regions.
Examples: The West is a region of the USA.
Human-Environment Interaction
Definition: Human-Environment Interaction describes how people change their environment and how the environment changes the way that people live.
People adapt to their environment.
Example: We have warm clothes that we wear in the wintertime.
People modify their environment.
Example: Rainforests are cleared for farmland.
People depend on their environment.
Example: People depend on good soil to grow food.
