Five Themes of Geography
Movement
Describes how goods, ideas, information, and people migrate.
Examples: People/products travel by cars, planes, boats, and animals. Ideas/information move through the internet, USPS, talking to others, and letters/email.
Region
Describes an area with similar cultural or physical characteristics that set it apart from other areas.
Examples: countries, cities, states, continents, Montana, California, United States of America, Havre, Hill County
Human-Environment Interaction
Describes how people change their environment and how the environment changes how people live
People adapt to their environment
Examples: Face coverings in the desert for protection,
People depend on their environment
Example: To grow food/crops, water, weather/rain, recreation
People modify their environment
Examples: build roads and houses
Location
Describes where a place is on earth
Absolute location is the EXACT location of a place.
Ex. 1441 11th Street West, Havre , MT 59501
Relative location is a description of a place's location in relation to other places
Ex. Zip Trip is near apartment complexes and the laundromat in Highland Park.
Place
Describes the physical and human characteristics of a location
Human characteristics describe the people of the present and the past of a place
Physical characteristics describe the environment of a place
Ex. Bear's Paw Mountains, Fresno
