Speech-Language Impairments (articulation disorders)
Adding unecessary letters to words
Omitting letters from words "libary" instead of "library"
Substituting letters in a word with incorrect letters
Strategy: have students practice oral presentations before giving them and consider allowing group oral presentations rather than solo
Ex) group presentation
Specific Learning Disabilities (Dyscalculia)
Hard time remembering basic facts
Difficulty counting backwards
Difficulty with mental math
Strategy: Draw out a math problem or use manipulatives so that it's visual and not as abstract, making it easier to understand since it's more concrete
Ex) manipulatives
Intellectual Disabilities (Down Syndrome)
Communication skills aren't very developed
Adaptive behavior isn't well-developed
Mild to moderate intellectual functioning, usually substantially below their peers
Strategy: Provide visuals around the room so students are exposed to common words and their corresponding image
Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities (Conduct Disorders)
Destructive behavior to property
Often lying or stealing
Aggression towards people or animals
Ex) Seating chart
Strategy: Create seating arrangements so that students with EBD are close to you and away from students who they react negatively to
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Easily distracted
Unable to sit still and are usually fidgeting
Constantly interrupting
Strategy: provide fidget toys for students with ADHD to use during lessons
High-Functioning Autism
hard time understanding social cues
Obsessions to routines
Strategy: create visual classroom routines and stick to them, informing students ahead of time of there will be a change in routine for some reason
