AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION
What is it?
Severe or complete upper airway obstruction due to a foreign body in the larynx and pharynx rapidly progresses to unconsciousness and cardiac arrest within minutes

SYMPTOMS:
Choking
Gagging
Violent expiratory effort
Cyanosis
Labored breathing can result in cardiac arrest
TREATMENT

Clear Airway Unsuccessful
Activate EMS
Place pt. supine
Tilt head and continue to clear obstruction
Check for respiratory sounds
Sings of Recovery:
Normal breathing
Foreign body removed
If foreign object not recovered refer pt. for a radiographic location
Sings of Deteriorating:
Obvious cyanosis
Loss of consciousness
Cardiac arrest
MAINTAIN BLS and WAIT FOR EMS
