Types

Chipboard
Properties & Uses - Made from small chips of wood that are glued together and compressed to make a dense material. Chipboard can't get wet as it expands and breaks up. So no good for damp environments such as kitchens or bathrooms. Not strong structurally but very cheap. Usually covered in a thin veneer of wood or plastic to improve the looks and make more durable. Used for floors, furniture, countertops and low cost cabinets

Block-board
Properties & Uses - Made from strips of timber glued length ways and a veneer is glued to the top and bottom surfaces to hide the strips. Used for better quality and stronger work tops and shelving. Very good at resisting bending and bowling

Hardboard
Properties & Uses - Properties & Uses - Made in the same way as MDF but is much more dense. Darker brown in colour than MDF and thinner sheets 4mm is a common thickness. Pegboard has uniform holes to use for tool racks. Used for panels wall linings, draw bottoms and backs, moulded panels, back of picture frames and floor linings

Plywood
Properties & Uses - Odd number of layers of veneer to stop warping glued using foraldehyde resin at 90 degree angles for strength, aesthetically pleasing outer layer. Used for shelving, construction and toys

Laser plywood
Properties & Uses - Can be cut using a laser. Very quality to not have any gaps between layers of veneer. Uses non toxic glue when cut. Uses veneers that are less dense than regular plywood.
