GIG WORK: These jobs are small in duration, a few days, few weeks, maybe a few months. It is easy to take advantage of people because it is a small amount of time, often they are not at home, working away in another city, state or even country. If you have a problem, i.e. not getting paid, watching illegal or dangerous things going on, being asked to partake in illegal or dangerous things. If there are problems where will you go? There isn't even a real HR dept on-site let alone in the company. The corporate office is in another, city, county, or state, you don't even actually work for them, but for a 3rd party company that really doesn't even have you as an employee either. The short duration of work combined with the transientness of the biz make it very hard to control abuse of staff especially if they are low level workers.
SILENCE: True people sign NDAs to work in the biz. But they don't talk, they don't talk to the press or if they do it is not under their names. They have private groups on FB to discuss things, they gossip a lot but overall the world they dwell in is an unknown place that most civilians don't know about, no one talks about it at all. People do not talk about this world at all. The talent don't know this is going on in their names either a lot is kept from them and vice versa.
THE FAVORITE: There is a real strong presence of favorites with management. If you can be one you can get better jobs. Others do it. The people willing to be that person look at it like they are just investing in themselves.
