Fluid
1.Hypertonic
Enter vessels from the cells
What are they?
Hypertonic fluids have a higher osmolarity than the blood and will cause water to leave the intraceullar space and move into the extracellular space
Indications:
• Severe
hyponatraemia
• Cerebral oedema
Examples:
• 5% normal saline
• 3% normal saline
• 5% dextrose on
0.9% saline
• 10% dextrose in water
2.Isotonic
Stays where is put eg
What are they?
Isotonic fluids have the same osmolarity as the blood and results in water equally transferring in and out of the cell.
They stay where they are put!
Indications:
• Fluid loss
• Blood loss
• Maintenance fluids
• Patients who are nil by mouth
Examples:
• 0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline)
• Hartmanns
3.Hypotonic
moves out of vessels
What are they?
Hypotonic fluids have a lower concentration of solutes than the blood and cause water to move from the extracelullar space to the intracellular space.i
Indications:
• Intracellular dehydration
• Hypernatraemia
• 0.45% Normal saline
• 5% dextrose
