- appoint and re-assign party members
- replace allies of his opponents with his own allies (esp Trotsky)
- gain control over Cheka, renamed as NKVD resulting in huge shrink of Trotsky's supporter base

- reputation destroyed, ideas discredited + lack of support
- forced to resign as head of red army (1925)
- expelled from Party in 1927 (bc Stalin)
- continued oppose and criticize Stalin through writings after expulsion
- assassinated (Stalin) in 1940 (Mexico) while in exile
Exploitation of ideological divisions
- members of Party divided btwn moderates and radicals
- moderates followed Lenin's leadership &i ideology closely
- radicals had new ideas and challenged the system
- Stalin took advantage of ideological divisions and allied himself with both sides

Lev Kamenev, Grigory Zinoviev and Josef Stalin
