The Automaton Chess Player, "The Turk", was invented by Baron Wolfgang von Kempelen,a Hungarian nobleman. It pretended to be a pure machine, it included a "robotic" chess player, however it was a farce, the cockpit was a well-posed optical illusion that allowed a chess master to hide inside and operate the mannequin, it was a sensation wherever it went but it was destroyed in a fire in 1856.

The first logic machine was invented by Charles Mahon, the Earl of Stanhope. The "logic demonstrator" was a pocket-sized apparatus that solved traditional syllogisms and elementary questions of probability. Mahon is the forerunner of logic components in modern computers.
