Ancient Civilizations
Mespotamia
Writing: An example is, " The Sumerians devised the world's first script or writing system." " At first they used picture symbols to represent objects such as cattle,grain,or fish.(Steele 12)"
Location: On page 6 ,it said " most of ancient Mesopotamia lay within the borders of modern Iraq." Mesopotamia was located between two rivers flowing through the Middle East. (Steele)
Government: In the text it say's, " The homeland of the Assyrian people was around the Tigris RIver, a long way North of Babylon.(Steele 40)" " The area under Assyrian control expanded again under Sargon II, who seized power in 721 BCE. (Steele 40) "
Architecture: The author wrote " Like the ancient pyramids of Central America, ziggurats formed part of sacred precincts, which were thought to be earthly dwelling places of the god. "A lasting symbol of ancient Mespotamia is the ziggurat. (Steele 24)
Art- On page 30, it said " The small villages built in Mesopotamia between 7000, and 400 BCE grew bigger." " Sumer is the name given to the far south of Mesopotamia."
Religon- On page 14, it said " The Sumerians worshiped many gods and godesses." "The cresent moon was said to be the boat of moon god, sin."
Ancient Egypt
Location: On page 8 it says, "desert covers more than 90% of Egypt called the "Red Land". It also says that the Egyptians lived on the banks of the Nile River or beside canals extending from it." (Hart)
Art: The author wrote " You can see the glint of gold everywhere in Egyptian jewelry- mines between the Nile and the Red Sea coast yielded large quantities of this precious metal. The gold could be beaten into shape or cast in olds.(Hart, 56)
Architecture- The Author wrote "The first pyramid was built as the burial place of King Djoser in c.2650 BCE, by his gifted architect Imhotep (pp.34-35). It rose in six stages and is called the Step Pyramid.(Hart 20)"
Government: In Ancient Egypt the main "god and priest" was the Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt. On page 28 it says, "In theory, the pharaoh was supposed to preform the duties of the high priest in every temple in Egypt, but his place was usually taken by chief priest.(Hart)"
Writing: On page 34, it say's " Scribes had to be experts in writing hieroglyphs, an elaborate form of picture-writing with about 700 different signs. It was deliberately kept complicated so that not too many people could master it and the scribes kept their special position.(Hart)
Religion- On page 24, it said " The Egyptians worshiped hundreds of different gods and goddesses, and sometimes it is difficult to work out who was who. Many of the gods are represented by animals:a baboon might stand for Thoth, and Moon gof named Khonsu at another. (Hart 24)"
Ancient China
Inventions-In the text it say's "Throughout its imperial history, emperors encouraged the development of science and technology, and for centuries China led other nations in these areas.Gunpowder, paper,printing,and the compass are called the 4 great inventions.The wheelbarrow helped with trading so you didn't have to carry everything in your hands. (Cotterell 22)
Religion- On page 12, it says " Confucius encouraged ancestor worship because it strengthened family loyalties." In Ancient China they have a Chinese society which is known as the 3 pillars. The 3 pillars consists of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism,these are the main religions worshiped in Ancient China. (Cotterell)
Trading- An example is "International trade thrived because the caravans could travel without danger." Trading was super important because it grew Ancient China's population. It helped Ancient China grow wealtheir. (Cotterell 58)
Government- On page 18, it says " He gathered together scholars to form an imperial civil service, which was destined to run China for 2,000 years." In Ancient China's government it was ran by the civil service. The civil service was made up of civil servants and they were assigned to do jobs and make decisions regarding the government. (Cotterell)
Writing- On page 11, it said that oracle bones were tortoiseshells or ox bones, which were burned. The Shang kings used the oracle bones to answer important questions. The burnt shell created cracks which answered the questions presented. Chinese was the first written Asian language. They would write on tortoiseshells, ox boes, and bronzes. (Cottrell)
Location- The author wrote "Most people imperial China lived in the countryside and worked in the fields." North of China lots of crops were planted and carved into hillsides. Life in China was very similar peasants and farmers had the same jobs.Ancient China had a lot of grassland which helped with harvesting and farming for trading. Ancient China was near Yellow Valley River which helped with hydrating animals, family, and keeping up with water farm land. (Cotterell 34)
Art- On page 56,"China has been renowned for its exquisite arts and crafts." The would created tools for harvesting and farming. They made silk from spun cocoons of silkworms. (Cotterell)

Government: One example from the text was "A caste is a social group in which people are born and they cannot change.(https://sites.google.com/mccsc.k12.in.us/history-of-south-asia/home/1500-bc-aryans)" This text shows that their was a system that you were born into and you could be very high or very low. In the Caste system you could get good karma by doing your job so when you die you can get reborn into a higher level.
