Ancient China
Writing: On page 11, it said oracle bones were used to consult ancestors about important matters by the Shang kings. To make and oracle bone they would use an ox or tortoiseshell. They would burn the bone until cracks appeared, and the cracks were deciphered as the answers to their questions. (Cotterell)
Art: An example of art is jade, bronze, silk, and porcelain. Chinese rulers controlled how much of raw supplies countries got, and they ran government factories. The artisans were considered the most important members of society. (Cotterell 56)
Architecture/Technology: The graphic showed that China had some of the greatest inventions. Paper money, clockwork, silk, and umbrellas were all invented in China. Gunpowder was also invented in China, and that really helped them in their wars. (Cotterell 22)
Religion: On page 27, it said that Confucius taught people how to show respect to each other. He also said that a good ruler should respect and cherish his subjects and in return they should honor him. He also thought that respect in the family was a very important thing because it formed a strong bond between the family. (Cotterell)
Government: In the text it said that the Chinese Empire started in 221 B.C. The first emperor, emperor Qin Shi Huangdi, thought he was immortal, and his ruling ended in 207 B.C. During this short amount of time he forced his subjects to be slave laborers to build the Great Wall. (Cotterell 16)
Trade/Commerce: In the book, it says that trade thrived because they could travel without danger. The Mongols controlled the entire land of the Silk Road. The old law said that merchants were excluded from civil service jobs, and had to pay heavy taxes. (Cotterell 58)
Location: In the text it said that China is the world's oldest continuous location, it started in 221 B.C. to 1912. Deserts and mountain ranges cut off China from other cultures such as India, West Asia, and Europe. Up until 126 B.C. Cina thought they were the only civilization.(Cotterell 6) .
