ITV
ITV is a British free-to-air television network with its headquarters in London. It was launched in 1955 as Independent Television in an effort to compete with BBC Television, which had been established in 1932. ITV is the oldest commercial network in the UK.
ITV releases tons of documentaries on a regular basis which are targeted at all ages and demographics. They can all be viewed on the ITV Hub if you couldn't see them live on air.
BBC
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the national broadcaster of the United Kingdom. Headquartered at Broadcasting House in London, it is the world's oldest national broadcaster, and the largest broadcaster in the world by number of employees, employing over 22,000 staff in total.
The BBC is the largest broadcaster in the UK and so they have the widest range of documentaries to view. This includes documentaries such as The Planets, Blue Planet, and tones more however lots do tend to lean more on the factual and informative side of documentaries.
Online Streaming
Streaming services such as Netflix and amazon prime are now huge. So the range of shows they show is also very vast however I do think they target a younger audience with the layouts and themes of the apps.
Documentary series on Netflix include things like the very famous Tiger King that took the world by storm during the pandemic. I think the pandemic is also a good thing to talk about as all it has done is grow these platforms bigger as people were consuming so much more media when they were locked in their houses.
Channel 4
founded in 1982 Channel 4 is a publisher/broadcaster. As well as the main Channel 4 service, the Channel Four Group operates a variety of pay channels, including the E4 entertainment channel, E4+1, and three film channels. Through its Film Four division it produces and co-produces feature films for the UK and global markets.
Channel 4 offers documentaries such as The Secret Life of the Zoo, 24 Hours in Police Custody and Grand Designs
Dedicated Channels
Examples of channels like this are Discovery and the History channel which display tones of factual documentaries usually aimed at middle-aged men who have got an interest in learning something new.
