Secularism
Refers to the separation of religion from state
Why is secularism impoprtant
If a major religious group gets power then it could:
It could discriminate and persecute minorities
It could lead to discrimination and even killing of minorities
It could stop minorities from practicing its religion
Any form of religious discrimination is violating fundamental right to religious freedom
(Minorities = religious minorities)
Indian secularism
Jobs of a secular state:
To make sure that one religous group doesn't dominate another
To make sure that members of the same religious group don't dominate another
To make sure that the state doesn't enforce religion
To make sure that the state doesn't take away religious freedom of individuals
TO PREVENT RELIGIOUS DOMINATION
Strategy of interference
In order to respect the sentiments of all religions it doesn't interfere in religious matters
It can make exceptions for particular religious practices
Strategy of distancing from religion
The Indian state isn't ruled by a religious group
The indian state doesn't support any
ONE
religion
Law courts, police station, govt. schools can't promote any
ONE
religion
Strategy of non-interference
It can grant religious communities to set up their own schools, and aids them financially
It can ban some religious practices like untouchability
Secularism in USA
The first amendment prevents the legislature from making laws related to religion
The state can't declare any religion as the official religion
The state can't prefer one religion as official
State and religion can't interfere
