Observation Types

Direct Observation
Advantage:
- It is possible to record behavior simultaneously with your attendance.
- It does not depend on the ability of the interviewer to give the information.
- When the observer is not known there will be no reaction.
Disadvantages:
- Difficulty of being present at any moment or interval in which the phenomenon occurs.
- Difficulty knowing attitudes.
- Difficulty writing down or recording information.

Participant Observation
The central idea of participation is the penetration of the experiences of others in a group or institution.
The nature and degree of participation may vary according to the research objectives, the researcher, and the culture involved.
Kind of questions
Open questions
- Increases the chances of bias due to the interviewer, less control.
- The participation of the interviewer is reduced.
- Coding is complicated and expensive.
Closed questions:
- Yes or no
- Identification (age, occupation, place of birth, etc.)
- Closed questions with multiple-choice answers
Field Identification
Various Records
Gestures, non-verbal communication, tone of voice and speed of speech of people help interpret the meaning of their words.
Spaces and Subjects
Like the settings and activities, the people should be carefully described in the notes.
