Trust vs Mistrust
Age: Infancy; first year
Conflict: In this stage, an infant will rely on others to meet needs; if a person waits too long for comfort, mistrust occurs. (mistrust)
Sets stage for a lifelong expectation that the world will be a good and pleasant place to live. (trust)
Initiative vs Guilt
Age: Early childhood; 3-5 years
Children encounter a widening world and face new challenges that require active, purposeful, responsible behavior. (Initiative)
Conflict: A wide social circle requires purposeful behavior; too much self control results in guilt. (Guilt)
Identity vs Confusion
Age: Adolescence; 10-20 years
This stage answers the question of who a person is and what they are all about as a human. (Identity)
Conflict: If they do not achieve a healthy identity, they can develop role confusion. (Confusion)
Generativity vs Stagnation
Age: Middle adulthood
This stage focuses on a need to help the younger generation develop and lead useful lives. (Generativity)
Conflict: Stagnation; having done nothing to help next generation.
Integrity vs Despair
Age: Late adulthood
A person has a wide reflection of their life. (Integreity)
Conflict: A person can feel regretful and unfulfilled in their life. (Despair)
Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt
Age: Infancy; 1-3 years
Conflict: If pushed or punished too hard, shame and doubt can arise. (shame and doubt)
After gaining trust from their caregivers, infants discover that their behavior is their own. (Autonomy)
Intimacy vs Isolation
Age: Early adulthood (20s and 30s)
This stage is about forming intimate relationships. (Intimacy)
Conflict: There can be an inability to form close relationships because of earlier issues and this can cause isolation. (Isolation)
Industry vs Inferiority
Age: Middle+late childhood; 6-11 years
This stage involves mastering knowledge and intellectual skills. (Industry)
Conflict: Master knowledge stage; can feel unproductive and incompetent. (Inferiority)
