Thermo Plastics - can be re heated and re shaped
Plastic - Raw Materials
Plastics are mostly made from oil and go through a chemical process called fractional distillation
Plastics are made from heating the plastic and making a mould
What are the problems that are associated with it
Plastics do not biodegrade and take tens of thousands of years to do so. When you throw away your plastic it is going to sit in a landfill under the groud which is not going to be good for the environment
polythene
High Density
tough and can be blow molded
toys, bucket, bottles for shampoo
low density
Made into thin film
carrier bags, wiring insulation, squeezy bottles
Thermo plastics
(ABS) is strong, tough, scratch resistant and resists heat and chemicals. Used for Kettles vacuum cleaners.
(PVC) Polychloroethene can be plasticised by different amounts to make a wide range of plastics. window frames, gutters, disposable pens.
(PS) Polystyrene is used to make vending cups and model kits. It is light, transparent but quite brittle.
(PP) Polypropylene is versatile and flexible without breaking, and can withstand variable temperatures. Yoghurt and butter tubs, crisp packets, garden furniture and car bumpers.
(Nylon) Polymides are hard, tough and resist water wear, however are hard to join. They are often self lubricant and machine very well. Fabrics/Clothes, rope and combs
Polyesters are used as fibres in textiles and in cassettes and video tapes.
Polyurethane can come as thermosets as well as thermoplastics. Can be rubbery, rigid, or flexible. It is used to make car bumpers, shoes, trainers and furniture.
Polycarbonates are used to make CD packaging, bus shelters and car lights. They have high strength, are transparent and are good resistors.
(PMMA) Acrylic is often used as glass substitute. Acrylic is strong and a good insulator, but scratches easily.
Bakelite is hard and brittle and a good insulator. Used for electrical plugs, sockets, switches and toilet seats
