Integumentary Melissa Figuero Per 1
Major functions of the body
Protection- 3 barriers (chemical/physical/biological); protects against abrasions/temp. extremes/microorganisms
Body temp. regulation- dilation/constriction of dermal vessels when body temp. rises or falls
Cutaneous sensations- receptors are part of nervous system
Metabolic functions- skin makes collagenase
Blood reservoir- skin can hold up to 5% of body's total blood volume
Excretion of wastes- secretes limited amounts of nitrogenous wastes
Layers of skin and structures
Dermis- underlies epidermis; fibrous connective tissue; vascular
Hypodermis- subcutaneous layer; adipose tissue
Epidermis- epithelial tissue; avascular; 5 layers (CLGSB); keratinocytes/melanocytes/dendritic cells/tactile cells
Skin cancer and ABCD rule
Squamous cell carcinoma- second most common; can metastasize
Basal cell carcinoma- least malignant and most common
Melanoma- most dangerous; highly spreads; resistant to chemo; cancer of melanocytes
ABCD- a:asymmetry; b:border irregularity; c: color; d: diameter
Degrees of burns and Rule of Nines
Second degree- epidermal and upper dermal damage; blisters
Third degree- skin color turns gray-white/cherry red/black; no swelling or pain since nerve endings are destroyed
First degree- epidermal damage only; redness, swelling, pain
Rule of Nines- body is broken into 11 sections w each representing 9% of the body surface and genitalia representing 1%
