Major functions of the skin
Cutaneous sensation is another function of the skin where cutaneous sensory receptors are part of the nervous system as the respond to and sense stimuli
Blood reservois is also a major function of the skin as it can hold up to 5% of the body's total blood volume.
Another major function of the skin is body temperature regulation which is where the sweat glands can act to produce sweat to help regulate body temperature. The skin can also have the dermal blood vessels constrict to slow heat loss.
Metabolic function is also a major function as the skin can synthesize vitamin D needed for calcium absorption in the intestine.
One of the major functions of the skin is to protect the contents inside. The skin is exposed to many harmful things and this constitutes three barriers being the chemical barrier, the physical barrier and the biological barrier
layers of skin
The dermis is composed of strong flexible nervous tissue with the cells including fibroblasts, macrophages, and occasionally mast cells and white blood cells.
Epidermal: Most superficial layer. It is made up of 5 different layers. 4 layers in think skin which excludes the stratum lucidum. The different layers of epidermis in order from most deep to most superficial are Stratum Basale, Statum spinosum, statum granulosum, stratum lucidum and statum corneum
skin cancer: There are three different types of skin cancer which are Basel cell carcinoma, Squamos cell carcinoma and the most dangerous of all melanoma. These cancers manifest in a physical form by appearing on skin.
Squamos cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer and this cancer can slowly begin to invade the dermis and hypodermis (exists in the epidermis) This skin cancer can usually be cured by radiation therapy or through being surgically removed.
Melanoma is the least common and most dangerous of these three skin cancers. This is cancer of melanocytes and is metastatic and resistant to chemotherapy.
Basel Cell carcinoma: Basel cell carcinoma is the least malignant and the most common skin cancer and can usually be cured by surgical excision
Early detection of the Melanoma cancer is the key to survival with the ABCD rule which is A being the pigmented area being ASYMETRICAL, B being border irregularity, C being the pigmented area containing several colors and D being the diameter being larger than 6mm.
Degree of a burn
Second Degree Burn: A second degree burn is classified as damage to the epidermal layer and the upper dermal layer. This burn is particularly painful because the nerve endings are in the dermal layer and blistering occur
Third Degree Burn: A third degree burn is a burn that penetrates the entire skin thickness. Not painful because the nerve endings are destroyed. The skin become discolored to black, red, or to a grey-white color
First Degree Burn: The First degree burn is classified as being only epidermal damage with only epidermal damage. It can be painful and usually some redress occurs.
