Nervous Systerm
CNS
SPINAL CORD
Damage:
- If it is damaged, the are supplied by spinal nerves below the damaged site will be cut of from the brain and will stop functioning resulting in paralysis.
Reflexes:
- There are also circuits of nerve cells that enable us to perform simple reflexes without direct involvement of the brain.
- For example, pulling hand away from something hot.
- It is connected to different parts of the body by pairs of spinal nerves which connect to specific muscles and glands.
- Spinal nerves which branch from the thoracic region of the spinal cord send messages to and from the chest.
MAIN FUNCTION:
It allows the brain to monitor and regulate bodily function like breathing and coordinate voluntary movements. _
-
It is a collection of nerve cells that are attached to the brain and run the length of the spinal column.
In order to do this, the brain must receive sensory information and send messages to muscles and glands. This involved the spinal cord.
-
BRAIN
The brain is divided into four parts: cerebrum, cerebellum, diencephalon, brain stem.
Cerebrum.
-
It is divided into four lobes, each with a different function.
-
-
-
-
-
Cerebellum.
- Sits beneath the back of the cerebrum.
- Controlling a person's motor skills and balance, coordinating the muscles to allow precise movement.
- Abnormalities = speech and motor problems = epilespy.
Diencephalon.
- Lies beneath the cerebrum and on top of the brain stem.
-
Brain stem.
- Responsible for regulating the automatic function that are essential for life.
- We cannot live without.
- It controls breathing, heartbeat and swallowing.
- Motor and sensory neurons travel through the brain stem allowing impulses to pass between the brain and spinal cord.
-
-
What is it?
- It is a complex network of nerve cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to different parts of the body.
- Helps all parts of the body to communicate with each other.
- The brain controls the nervous system.
- It oversees workings of the body.
- Divided into two parts: the central and the peripheral nervous system.
