Unit 6 Crossing the Land with Steam Power
the end of the eighteen centuries
People walked, rode a horse, or
took a horse-drawn carriage.
people began to build railroads and trains powered by steam locomotives.
Mail and supplies took a considerable amount
of time to get from one place to another
Steam power helped people and goods get moving.
mechanical energy
can be used to run many types of machines.
Water in a cylinder was heated until it boiled.
The steam pushed up a machine part called a piston.
In1698 a steam engine was made to run a pump in England
in 1790, James Watt constructed a better steam engine
He developed it into one that used pistons to turn a wheel.
It could power many types of machines that used circular motion.
railroad cars
Richard Trevithick used a high-pressure steam engine to make the first steam locomotive.
In just one trip, it proved that steam
power could pull railroad cars.
Later, in 1825, the first true railroad came into use in England. It carried people and supplies on scheduled trips.
The first railroad in theUnited States
was Baltimore and Ohio (B&Q)
By 1869 they were running all the way from
the East Coast to the West Coast. People, supplies,
and mails moved quickly and safely.
