Impacts of climate change
ECONOMIC
Harbours and ports could be effected by rising sea levels, which would impact fishing and other trades.
Valuable agricultural land may be affected by sea water and become unusable.
Coastal defence is expensive but may be required to protect some areas.
Many important cities such as New York and London could be affected by flooding.
Transport systems could be damaged or destroyed.
Beaches may be flooded or eroded which would severely impact countries that are mainly dependent on coastal tourism.
Valuable agricultural land may be damaged by drought and become unusable.
ENVIRONMENTAL
Harbours could get blocked by sediment due to coastal erosion.
Coastal ecosystems could be damaged.
Wells and freshwater sources could become polluted by seawater, this process is called salinisation.
Coral reefs may be damaged which would effect some fish populations and ecosystems.
It is estimated that up to 33% of coastal land and wetlands could be lost in the next 100 years, this could be damaging to some species whose natural habitat is in these areas.
Extreme weather, such as extremely hot summers is more common which may damage ecosystems and could lead to droughts etc.
Extremely high rainfall in a short period of time can lead to natural disasters such as landslides.
SOCIAL
People living in vulnerable areas may have to move homes / move country.
People employed in certain industries such as tourism and fishing may lose their jobs
The number of people who have lost their homes to flooding, called environmental refugees, will increase.
600 million people live in coastal areas less than 10m above sea level who could be at risk if sea levels rise
Some people will experience floods and storms more often, meaning there will be more flood and storm damage to repair.
People may suffer from drought, and livestock may also suffer from drought which may affect industries such as farming.
Tropical diseases such as malaria will effect more people
