Osteomalacia
Defination

As a result, the skeleton softens and weakens, causing pain, tenderness, bowing of the bones and pathologic fractures.
Pathophysiology
The primary defect is a deficiency in activated vitamin D, calcitriol.

Osteomalacia may result from failed calcium absorption, malabsorption.
Excessive loss of calcium due to biliary tract obstruction, chronic pencreatitis and bowel are section.

Softened vertebrae become compressed and derforming thorax, kyphosis.

Medical management

If osteomalacia is caused by Malabsorption, increased doses of vitamin D along with supplemental calcium.

Diagnostic findings

X-ray studies, bone biopsy shows increased productivity osteoid.
Nursing Interventions
-
Reduce incidents of fractures with prevention, identification and management of osteomalacia.
