properties and uses of different Radiations
Gamma rays
source
they are obtained in radioactive emissions
properties
they cause fluroscence when they strike fluroscent material such as zinc sulphide ,they can easily pentrate through thick metallic sheets
uses
they are used in industry to check welding
X - Rays
uses
they are used in detection of fracture in bones teeth etc.
properties
they strongly affect a photogrphic plate ,they can pentrate through human flesh but stopped by bones
UV radiations
properties
these radiations travel in straight line with a speed of 3 x 10 to the power 8 m s -1 in air and vaccum
they are scattered by dust particles present in earth's atmosphere
they follow the laws of reflection and refraction
they affect strong photographic plate as they are chemically more active than visible light
uses
for sterilising air,surgical equipment
for detecting purity in gems ,ghee etc
visible light
sources
the sun,electric bulb and flame
uses
the visible light is used in photography
infrared radiations
properties
they do not affect the ordinary photographic flim
uses
infrared radiations are used for therpeutic purposes by doctors
they are used in remote control of television and other gadgets
they are absorbed by glass but they pass through rock-salt
they are detected by heating process using blackened bulb thermometer
microwaves
source
these waves are produced by electronic devices such as crystal oscillators
uses
they are used in satellite communication ,for cooking in microwave and ovens
Radio waves
uses
these waves are used in radar communication and in radio and television transmission
