1607: first permanent English settlement in North America - Jamestown in Virginia was founded and named after the Kind of England James I.
The Europeans imported epidemics, such as smallpox, measles, typhus and alcoholism, which caused the dying of Native peoples in large numbers
Many Natives were forced to work for the European colonizers but they died in large numbers. In order to satisfy the demand for labor, Africans were imported.

Language Situation
Natives
hundreds of languages belonging to different language families - mutually unintelligible - from that followed a lack of common identity and group solidarity
Orality: ceremonial traditions, blessing chants,... —> nothing was written down - it was orally explained to each other, from generation to generation
until the 20th century, often the Eurocentric attitude prevailed that “oral literatures” are not proper literatures and thus need not be included in the canon. Thus Native voices have been marginalized
