Plaster of paris casts

Definition

Plaster of paris casts refers to covers made of plaster of paris, which are used for protection of broken bone.

Indications

Immobilization and support of injured limb

Prevention of further injuries

Early moblization of unaffected body parts

Pain relieve intervention.

Nursing diagnosis

Impaired physical mobility related to the cast.

Problem

Immobility

Patient will be able to move limb and participate in activities

Maintain immobilization of the affected limb, by keeping patient at bed rest. Rationale prevention of bone displacement.

Avoid supporting the limb in the cast with Plastic sheets and pillows . Rationale can increase discomfort by enhancing heat production in the drying cast.

Evaluation

The patient reported to be able to move the fractured limb.
