Heidi Ochoa Period.1 ingumentary system
Layers of the skin
Epidermis:
Superficial region, epithelial tissue and is avascular
Hypodermis (Superficial fascia): Subcutaneous layer deep to skin. Includes adipose tissue
Dermis: Underlies epidermis, fibrous connective tissue, avascular
Burns
Second degree:
Epidermal and upper dermal damage, blisters
Third degree:
Entire thickness of skin. Skin color turns gray-white, cherry red, or blackened
First degree:Epidermal damage only redness, edema (swelling), and pain
Skin Cancer
Squamous cell carcinoma:Second most common typeUsually is a scaly reddened papule on scalp, ears, lower lip, or hands. Needs radiation
Basal cell carcinoma: least malignant, cured by surgical excision
Melanoma:
Most dangerous ABCD rule to help detection.
A-asymmetry

Major functions of the skin
Cutaneous Sensations:
Part of the nervous system, free nerve endings sense painful stimuli
Metabolic Functions: synthesize vitamin D for calcium absorption. Skin makes collagense
Body tem. Regulation: body regulates temp by releasing sweat to cool down body.
Blood reservoir:
Skin can hold 5% total blood volume. Muscles can be constricted to shunt blood to other organs
Protection:
Chemical barrier, Physical barrier, Biological barrier
Excretion of Wastes:
secretes nitrogenous waste, such as ammonia, urea, and uric acid
