she is naive to the fact that her son Eric has a drinking problem
She is a prominent member of a woman's charity that denies financial aid to daisy renton because she takes Mrs Birling's name
Mr Birling's wife
Eric Birling
He is a heavy drinker because he is a higher class and he is younger he is expected to behave and act a certain way so his hobby to get away from all the expectations is to go to the bar and drink and pick up girls
Since he is also younger towards the end he understands what they have done wrong and he is guilty about it
The son of Mr and Mrs Birling
Gerald Croft
Since he is a higher class and is expected to behave a certain way he also drinks and goes to bars to get away from the strict expectations
He is engaged to Sheila Birling
He is part of the Croft family which are rivals to the Birling family in business but the Croft family is higher class and more well off when it comes to money
Mr Arthur Birling
He thinks he is going to have a knighthood in the near future
He is higher class alongside the rest of the birling family so he has a certain view on things and doesn't care much for the less well off people
He is an active member of the community in brumley
Mr Birling is the head of the Birling household. He has made himself very wealthy by being a 'hard-headed' business man
Sheila Birling
She is engaged to Gerald Croft because her father encouraged it because he could get more status and influence if the croft family (A higher class family then the birlings)and the birling family worked together
She is younger so she isn't so set in her ways like her mother or father so near the end of the play she is more concerned and feels more remorse to what they have done
She is the daughter of Mr Arthur Birling
Inspector Goole
The inspector is omniscient (meaning he knows all) this could be because the inspector is a ghost because the name "Goole" suggests that
he has a demanding presence about him and he always has control over the conversation even though he is talking with higher class people
It is unknown what Inspector Goole is because at the end of the play it is confirmed he isn't really an inspector
