Improving Communication between cultures
What?
What is the problem statement? The problem statement is investigating how varying cultures and diversity can become a barrier for communication.
Body language and behavioral factors vary across cultures, thus affecting communication, For instance, eye contact in western culture is important whereas eye contact in Caribbean cultures is aggressive or disrespectful. This is simply one example where varying cultures affect communication.
Who?
The target audience for the proposed problem statement are people of the age 13-17 otherwise known as young adults.
I have chosen this specific age group because this generation is technology driven, and while this can bring about its respective advantages, being largely technology dependent has shown a drop in face to face, conversational talks.
When?
At what point does a solution like this come in handy? A time when friends are unable to relate to one another. For instance, during one friend's festival the other friend may find it difficult to comprehend or understand the other.
Another instance where this problem statement can be identified is when colleagues at work fail to communicate to their best ability, This is because they were taught differently, experienced different events and have a different understanding on the same topic.
How?
I plan on increasing and strengthening relationships between people through interactive activities such as games.
Research conducted in Scotland proves that any form of game increases resourcefulness, communication skills and adaptability.
Where?
The best settings the solution to these problem scenario can be useful are at work settings such as college, offices and school.
Another extremely relevant instance this solution can be helpful is during time of Travel. While travelling, tourists often find it difficult to communicate with locals, resulting in difficulty in doing their task such as driving to a destination.
Why?
Through solving this issue, communication strengthens which creates a happier, more understanding society.
Due to differences, all types of people around the world have suffered. One such example is the strong hostility between India - Pakistan. What once was on the basis of religion, has now entered its way into sport, politics, food and culture. To unite opposing cultures, I hope to find a solution to the proposed problem statement.
Problem Scenario
On 7th - 15th August I participated in a program created by the Harvard Global Education Movement which focused on finding solutions to prevalent issues in society in the form of a research proposal.
Problems faced?
- Varying experiences on topics.
- Lack of relatability due to differences.
- Difficult to arrive to consensus.
- Poor communication overall
