Secularisation - Coggle Diagram

- - - - For instance, the church has lost a considerable level of influence over the spheres of education, law and social welfare.
    - - In this way, religion can be argued to have become a matter of individual choice, and may not, in a sociological sense, be discussed as an all-encompassing structure, equal to that of education, for instance, as Marxist or functionalist theory posits. Following this, symbols and traditional rituals may be argued to have lost meaning.
      - Even where religion continues to exert its influence, as evidenced by the continued existence of faith-based schools, it must still conform to the requirements of the secular state. A growing refusal to identify a religiously-pluralistic society with one predominant religion, further cements this separation of church and state.
        
        This could additionally be perceived as a normalised phenomenon - it is associated with democracy, and in this sense, has become emblematic of progressive societies. The oppressive qualities of institutional religion become evident in this shift, and perhaps may in part, explain such secularisation.
