BIODIVERSITY
Biodiversity
It is the variation of life forms, within a given ecosystem, biome or for the entire earth.
It refers to the varieties of plants, animals and micro-organisms, the genes they contain and the ecosystems they form.
Nomenclature
Process of standardizing the naming of living organisms such that a particular organism is known by the same name globally.
Identification
Process of describing an organism accurately and knowing what name the organism is attached to
Binomial Nomenclature
System of providing names with 2 components:
Generic Name
&
Specific Epithet
Given by Carolus Linnaeus
Classification
It is the process by which anything is grouped into convenient categories based on some easily recognizable characters.
Each category is called as
'taxa'
Process of classification is known as
taxonomy
Systematics
Branch of study dealing with the relationships between organisms and their diversities
Take evolutionary relationships of organisms into account
Scientific names are agreed on based on a few principles and criteria and then provided in the
international code for botanical nomenclature
Similarly, animals are named and those names are provided in the
International code of zoological nomenclature
Scientific names ensure:
There is only 1 name for an organism
2.That people come to the same conclusion for a name when given a description of the organism
Species diversity
refers to the variety of different species
Genetic diversity
corresponds to the variety of genes contained in plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms
Ecosystem diversity
refers to all the different habitats that exist, like tropical or temperate forests, hot and cold deserts, wetlands, rivers, mountains, coral reefs, etc.
Conserve:
It means to protect the different species of plants and animals
Biotechnology:
Any technology that is applied to living organisms to make them more valuable to people.
Co-Management -
The management of a specific resource (such as forest or pasture) by a well defined group of resource users with the authority to regulate its use by members and outsiders.
Eco Tourism -
Travel undertaken to witness sights or regions of unique natural or ecologic quality, or the provision of services to facilitate such travel that have the least impact on biological diversity and the natural environment.
Biome -
A major portion of the living environment of a particular region (such as forest or grassland) characterized by its distinctive vegetation and maintained largely by local climatic conditions
