Unit 2: Hatch poultry eggs
Set poultry eggs
Observe and adhere to hatchery biosecurity measures
Transfer hatching eggs into setting trays with broad ends facing up
Load setting trays with hatching eggs onto setting trolleys
Drive/push loaded setting trolleys or trays into incubation chamber and locked in for incubation.
Identify and donn
Personal Protection Equipment and Apparel (PPEs)
• Overalls
• Gumboots
• Nose and mouth mask
• Goggles
• Gloves
• Head gear
Retrive hatching eggs from cold store into the egg traying room using recommended
hatching egg handling regulations
• Sanitize their hands or wear gloves whenever handling eggs
• Be free from communicable diseases
• Handle eggs with care
• Avoid wetting the eggs
Set
incubation chamber parameters
• Temperature
• Humidity
• Air quality and flow
• Egg inclination
Monitor egg hatching
Remove eggs from the incubation chamber on the 18th day post setting
Caddle eggs to remove non fertile ones and those with dead embryos
Transfer fertile eggs with developing embryos into hatching baskets
Transfer loaded hatching baskets into hatching chamber / machine
Monitor hatching process from the 20th day onwards for about 33 hours
Transfer hatched chicks
Pull hatching baskets with chicks, un-hatched eggs and hatching debris from the hatching chamber / machine on the 21st day
Remove hatched, dry and healthy chicks from the hatching baskets and transferred to chick cartons / crates
Dispose hatchery wastes with due regard to
environmental protection regulations

Enter hatchery records
Enter number of eggs set and candled into the hatchery inventory records
Enter number of fertile and rejected eggs into the hatchery inventory record
Record dates of setting, candling and transfer to hatching chamber
