Academic writing and Research skills
Academic writing: can be defined as a genre in identifiable forms of written language. In this genre writers write for a community of scholars in their area of study.
Being critical is a prerequisite for an academic piece of work. Plagiarism
In academics plagiarism is treated like property and it is immoral, unethical and is a serious offence. Plagiarism is also against UJ's regulations and is regarded as a serious offence.
Plagiarism is an academic offence whereby the acknowledgement of the source of information was either incorrectly done or not done at all.
It is an act of presenting someone else's work or ideas as if they were your own without acknowledging the author or source. In addition, the act of plagiarism can either be intentional or unintentional depending on the student's knowledge regarding plagiarism.
-To use ones ideas, opinions, facts and phrases from consulted source one need to be properly acknowledgement as if not, that would be regarded as academic theft.

-Extracting someone’s exact words without inserting quotation marks or block indention is an act of plagiarism.
-using synonyms derived from the source of information is also an act of plagiarism as that does not require independent thinking.

Preventative measures:

-Faculties have a responsibility of helping students understand the conventions that govern academic communication such as the institutions plagiarism policy, preference style of referencing and support facilities meant for students.
-Academic employees have the duty to assist student to reach their full potential as that they may produce desired outcomes such as being independent and critical thinkers.
-Academic employees have a duty of knowing and understanding the university policy on plagiarism and encourage its consistent application to students.

-Ensuring that they familiarise themselves with the university’s plagiarism policy and adheres to the preferred referencing style.

- Protect their work from being copied by other peers/colleagues.
Forms of plagiarism Written texts, multimedia products, visual texts, music, spoken text, creative works and another person’s assignment.
